THE BIG PICTURE
Cape Cormorant / Afr.
Trekduiker. Betty’s Bay
A large, dark bird, about the size
of a crow, the Cape Cormorant is a
common sight along the Cape coast.
I photographed this specimen at
the Stony Point Penguin Reserve
in Betty’s Bay. It is often seen
diving for fish or drying its wings
on rocks. Primarily a piscivore, it
dives underwater to catch fish. It
nests in large colonies on cliffs or
islands, and both parents share the
responsibilities of nest building,
incubation, and feeding the young.
