THE BIG PICTURE
THE LONG-TAILED
WIDOWBIRD
Afr. Langstertflap
The Long-tailed Widowbird is renowned for
the males’ extraordinarily long tails, which can
reach up to a meter in length. These elongated
tail feathers play a crucial role in their elaborate
courtship displays.
The photograph depicts a male Long-tailed Wid-
owbird performing a slow, mesmerising flight
to attract a female. During this display, he flits
gracefully across the grasslands, showcasing
his impressive tail feathers in all their glory. This
slow, controlled flight serves a dual purpose: it
not only allows the female to admire his mag-
nificent tail but also demonstrates his fitness
and stamina.
Primarily graminivores, Long-tailed Widowbirds
feed on seeds from various grasses. They are
social birds, often forming large flocks outside
of the breeding season. During breeding sea-
son, males establish territories and compete
fiercely for the attention of females.
