Gardening
February in the Garden
After the heat of mid-summer,
the temperatures are expected
to cool slightly during February,
making it more pleasant to spend
time out in the garden enjoying
the wonders of nature.
TO DO:
• Keep azaleas and camellias well-watered
to ensure a good show of flowers in
winter and next spring. to promote loss
of blooms, cover the soil with mulch to
create an acid medium.
• Sweet peas can be sown now. Prepare
a trench and add turfnet’s organic
contour compost to the soil. the key to
success with sweet peas is enriched and
drained soil. soak the seeds overnight
in warm water before sowing directly in LENA SVENSSON FROM PIxAbAy
the trench.
• Do not allow your lawn to become too
long and then mow it too short. this
exposes the roots to the sun. rather
mow more frequently with the blades
set on high. Water deeply once a week if
it has not rained and feed with turfnet’s
organic fine compost to keep your lawn
lush and actively growing. Look out for
mole crickets, ants, and harvest termites.
• Keep watering and deadheading flowers
and feeding them.
• Replace colourful annuals which are past
their prime with fast-maturing, heat-
tolerant ageratum, alyssum, marigolds,
Petunias, Phlox and Zinnias. FOR THE KITCHEN GARDENER:
