the architect was a family member and the
owners worked closely with him in their brief
to create a modern, open plan home. they
learned that before embarking on the build, it
is essential to work through as much detail as
possible in the development of the plan with
both the architect and builder. the aim was to

the owners strove in their plan to bring the
outside inside – they dislike curtains, so they

an extra room and bring the garden into
the home. similarly, the vegetable and fruit
gardens are very visible from the kitchen.
the owners have a great awareness of colours
which complement each other. the selection
of paint colours used was only five or six
shades of grey and white throughout. the
bathrooms and shutters are white, and the
neutral palette is highlighted by the addition

of green in one of the guest bedrooms.
the artwork in the house has been skilfully
arranged, and ranges from old family photos
to grouped, delicate watercolours and scenes
of south africa.
the garden, on the contrary, has lots of bright
colours – pink, purple, green and white, but
no yellow or red. due to the slope of the
landscape, the owners decided to create two
“garden rooms" separated by concrete steps,
which resulted in a sunny garden at the top
