Every little bit helps
B Y SIAN CLARK
heard about Dogs Trust just before
lockdown in 2020. There’s an animal
warrior called Ben Kuzwayo who walks
I the streets of Diepsloot feeding and
rescuing dogs.
I got in touch and offered to help, and met
up with the amazing Lee-Anne Ramalho
who gave up her day job to help feed as
many Diepsloot animals as she can. Lee-
Anne started Dogs Trust with just Ben and
a handful of volunteers.
Dogs Trust is run solely by volunteers,
relying on donations. We have three
collection points, and our Fourways
Gardens drop-off point never ceases to
amaze us with the incredible donations of
food, blankets and beds. Even dog bowls,
toys, and collars have made their way to
my front gate in Buffalo Thorn Road.
So this is what they do:
TOWNSHIP SCOUTING
Dogs Trust scouts go into the township
daily to find animals that are abused,
neglected, injured or kept in substandard
environments. Their aim is to remove and
rehome severe cases and to better the
living quarters of others by setting up
running chains, improving sleeping and
living conditions, providing warm beds for
winter, shelter for summer, as well as food,
water, collars and kennels.
They often have to remove animals due
to severe neglect or abuse. The medical
treatment is paid for by Dogs Trust and
their kind donors, and they manage to
successfully rescue and rehome about one
animal per week.
We PROVIDE food, water, collars,
leads, kennels, blankets and shade/
shelters.
We PROTECT by vaccinating,
sterilising, deworming and dipping.
We EDUCATE owners and distribute
leaflets to ease abuse and neglect.
