Security

Keyless vehicle theft is a concern.

Does my vehicle have a keyless entry system?
If you have to push a button on your keys to enter your vehicle, you
are not at risk of being hacked. Only vehicles with a keyless entry
system can be stolen using relay equipment (see below).

Keyless entry vehicles allow the driver to unlock and start the
vehicle with the key fob still in their pocket. Once in the vehicle, the
driver can press a button to start the engine.

          What is keyless vehicle theft?
Keyless theft is where the signal from a key for a so-called “keyless
entry” vehicle is captured by somebody standing in proximity to
          the victim’s vehicle.

          How it works:
Step 1 – The device transmits the signal to somebody else standing
                by the victim’s vehicle.
Step 2 – This then fools the vehicle into thinking the key is near
it, allowing the doors to be opened and the ignition to be
                started.

How far do thieves need to be away from my vehicle keys?
Keyless theft happens when thieves are only within a few metres
from your vehicle keys to capture the signal.

How long does keyless vehicle theft take to happen?
Keyless theft can take only 20 to 30 seconds.

What device is used in keyless vehicle theft?
Relay crime is when a specific type of specialist electronic
equipment captures the signal from the key and transmits it to a
receiver that somebody standing near the vehicle has.
                                                                  Security Officers of the Month
