Bristle Cone Trophy for the Most Innovative and Original Use of Plant
Material: Life Landscapes for Zululami Luxury Estate
In an unforgiving topography, the landscaper had to find innovative ways to create a
spectacle that would not compromise the integrity of the land. The turn-off into the estate
is the highest point on the site and is framed by large trees and a variety of veld grasses to
channel people into the space, then opening to the main gate of the estate. At this point,
one’s eyes are drawn straight towards the roof garden that sits on top of the office block
attached to the main gate. The transitional movement from the rooftop to the ground is
made effortless by the vertical gardening that clads the office block. The choice of planting
in the courtyard of the office block celebrates the intimacy of the space, while around the
water feature there is a sense of freedom and class.
Rand Water Trophy for the Best Water Wise Project: Leitch
Landscapes for Zimbali Coastal Forest Estate
Very impressive management and detail in plant grouping. There is a
comprehensive understanding of the site and the relationship with the client.
Watering is done only by water cart when necessary. The judges commented
that they were “completely in awe of the functional and aesthetic introduction
of biodiversity and ecological reinstatement.” The client is delighted with the
contractor’s understanding of species re-population and the re-establishment
of the forest which perpetuates endemic species population and sustainability
is worth noting. There are no alien invaders on the site – quite phenomenal!

Against the backdrop of a splashing water feature lies the Jewel City sign in its
yellow and white splendour. This is the highlight of the space that has drawn all
the attention and focus; it is a masterpiece of metal work that requires a very
close look at the sign to appreciate the craft. To manipulate steel like that takes
great expertise and it is simply a marvel to see the final product redefine space in
this way. A must-see for all industry enthusiasts.
