conditions meant that trees and plants
could not be irrigated with a water
bowser. Young had to source fresh
water, which was found at a quarry
located 35km out of Beira.
Despite the above difficulties, Barnard
says that Young and his team deserve
full credit for their work, and for the fact
that they planted zones that could be
irrigated and become established during
construction. “Justin also kept abreast
of which areas could be worked on,
establishing a good planting sequence.”
A local grower undertook the
propagation of white, red and black
mangrove trees and despite being
irrigated from a well containing fairly
saline water, these matured successfully.
From Barnard’s updated plant layout,
Young was able to make changes on the
spot and “did a very good job managing
everything,” says Barnard, who, during his
few visits, advised and commented on
the work being done, for example where
initial tree planting was too scattered and
needed more clustering. He also advised
that it was necessary to leave more space
around Baobab trees due to their massive
size, height and width. A 30 metre circle
