VIEWS AND OPINION

This resulted in coal power rising by
        9% to a record 10 042 TWh – 2% above
the previous record – and resulting in coal
generation accounting for 36% of global
        electricity.
           Of course, coal consumption is
        heavily concentrated among a handful
of mega users (visual below). Of these,
consumption is flat or falling everywhere
except where it really counts, namely
in China, India and Indonesia, numbers
1, 2 and 7 among the big global coal
consumers. Figure 3: Which countries have the highest share of wind (Ember)
Dave Jones, the global lead at Ember
says: “Even as coal and power emissions hit
another all-time high, there are clear signs
that the global electricity transition is well
underway. More wind and solar is being
added to grids than ever. And not just in a
few countries, but across the world.”
Ember’s message is consistent with the
        recommendations of the report recently
        released by the International Renewable
        Energy Agency (IRENA).
