              afternoon. Our site was set up - two-man tents
              with sleeping mats placed inside, toilet tents
              ZLWK ÁXVKDEOH SRUWDEOH WRLOHWV DQG GLQLQJ WHQWV
              laid out with chairs, tables and warm popcorn
              and drinks. In the evening, we received a bowl
              of warm water for washing, then we prepared
              for the next day and enjoyed a nice hot supper
              – with every meal we tasted the best soups
              VWDUWLQJ ZLWK FXFXPEHU VRXS RQ WKH ÀUVW QLJKW
              $IWHU P\ ÀUVW QLJKW HYHU VOHHSLQJ LQ D WHQW
              Day 2 started with what would become our
              typical morning routine: wake up call, wash up,
              tea and warm breakfast of oats porridge, toast,
              eggs and pancakes. Along our walk to Shira 1
              FDPS       P  ZH KDG RXU ÀUVW JODQFH RI WKH
              mountain we would be climbing, which seemed
              so large and far away. The Day 3 walk took us
              WR 6KLUD         P  E\ OXQFK WLPH DQG WKHQ DQ
              uphill acclimatisation hike in preparation for
              the next day. From Day 4, we were above the
              clouds where the weather became cooler. We
              trekked uphill to Lava Tower (4 642m) which is
              a similar elevation to the base camp and our
              ÀUVW WDVWH RI KLJK DOWLWXGH  DQG DIWHU OXQFK ZH
              KHDGHG GRZQ WR %DUUDQFR FDPS       P   'D\
              5 included rock climbing up the Barranco wall
              which was challenging and fun on the way to
              Karanga camp (4 040m).

              Day 6, our big day, started with a hike uphill to
              RXU EDVH FDPS %DUDIX       P   $IWHU OXQFK
              there was a little time for resting or napping                                   Summit Uhuru Peak - Day 7
              and preparation for the summit attempt. We
              started our summit attempt at 11:15pm -
              as the altitude increased, the temperature
              dropped and the air became thinner, making
              it more challenging to keep moving. After what
              seemed like a never-ending walk (about seven
              KRXUV   ZH UHDFKHG WKH ÀUVW ODQGPDUN  6WHOOD
              3RLQW DW      P MXVW DIWHU VXQULVH RQ    -XQH
              The sight of smiling climbers returning from
              the peak motivated us to push through the last
              RQH KRXU VWUHWFK WR 8KXUX 3HDN       P   7KH
              temperature was -10 degrees and the wind chill
              factor made it colder, where even our hydration
              pipes froze.

              Due to worsening weather conditions, we did
              not spend much time on the summit and had
              to begin descending after taking photographs.
              By lunch-time, when everyone had descended
              to base camp, we packed up and head for
              RXU ÀQDO QLJKW WR WKH FORVHU 0LOOHQQLXP FDPS
                    P  ZKLFK ZDV D FRPIRUWDEOH WKUHH KRXU
              trek downhill. After the best night’s sleep while
              FDPSLQJ  ZH SURFHHGHG GRZQ RQ RXU ÀQDO
              12km trek to Mweka Gate.
              Our operator hosted us for lunch and a
              FHUWLÀFDWH SUHVHQWDWLRQ FHUHPRQ\  DQG WKHQ ZH
              headed back to Ameg Lodge to enjoy the luxury
              of a shower, supper and celebrations.
