           and this area of natural light provides an additional roof surface for
           photovoltaic  (PV)  panels.  Almost  everyone  in  the  building  is  within
           seven metres of natural light and staff look up from their work stations
           straight out of the  large windows to the landscaped  gardens. LED
           lighting achieves greater energy efficiency, less maintenance and
           longer product life span. Motion sensor activated lighting prevents
           it from turning on or being left on unnecessarily, thereby reducing
           energy usage;
           •  interior  spaces  are  shaded  through  external  awnings,  reducing  the
           need for excessive air conditioning and shielding staff from glare. Each
           space is thermally controlled;
           •  solar PV system and battery back-up: this results in the site being 75%
           independent of the national grid;
           •  owl and bat houses: these have been introduced to create natural pest
           control measures. At the same time, they promote a safe environment
           for these critical birds and mammals.
            The refurbished offices and laboratories demonstrate dsm-firmenich’s
           support for the health, well-being and business performance of their
           employees.
