GREEN INDUSTRY NEWS
RAND WATER HONOURS GREEN
INDUSTRY LANDSCAPERS AND GARDEN
CENTRES FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF
WORLD CLASS WATER WISE STRATEGIES
warded annually since 2000, the Rand Water Floating Trophies
for the Best Water Wise Landscaping Project and Best Water
AWise Garden Centres in South Africa were presented by Rand
Water’s Coordinator for Water Wise Research, Mulalo Ramulondi, at a
Gala Evening event in June 2024 and hosted by the South African Green
Industries Council (SAGIC).
These prestigious Water Wise trophies honour adherence to world
class water wise principles:
• in landscaping – as judged by the South African Landscapers’ Institute
(SALI) in their 2024 SALI Awards of Excellence.
• in garden centre retailing – as judged by the South African Nursery
Association (SANA) in their annual 2024 Garden Centre Association
Awards.
The water wise winners for 2024 are:
2024 Best Water Wise Landscaping Project: GvH Landscapes for House
Erasmus in Plettenberg Bay.
SALI National Judge, Sbu Dladla said that this project “provides a master
class in waterwise landscape design. The site is situated on top of a rocky
hill. There is very little space, and the client was very specific. No lawn.”
Agricultural drains were installed to remove excess water from the
property, and a borehole and irrigation system were installed. Heavy
clay was removed to bedrock, and organic rich topsoil spread across
newly designed beds. Indigenous tree aloes feature as outstanding focal
points.
Below the tree aloes is an indigenous garden planted up with largely
coastal, hardy colour. The spectacular water wise pavement garden filled
with colourful indigenous coastal plants is a superb advertisement for
water wise landscaping.
An outstanding water wise project. Congratulations.
2024 Water Wise Garden Centre of the Year: Plant Paradise Garden
Centre, Moreleta Park, Pretoria
The SANA judges commended the general landscaping throughout the
nursery, which promoted water wise gardening.
An efficient water run-off management system is in place to catch
rainwater and general management of water within the garden centre
was focused on water saving.
All plant label information indicates the water usage level – which in
turn promotes the water wise concept of hydrozoning.
2024 Water Wise Home Store of the Year: Builders Express –
Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal.
The SANA judges commended this garden centre for highlighting water
wise plants across the store.
With a well-coordinated team of enthusiastic staff, this Builders Express
has put a great deal of effort into putting up water wise posters and
signage to create water wise awareness.
The Rand Water Floating Trophies for the Best Water Wise Landscaping
Project and Best Water Wise Garden Centres were presented at the
South African Landscaping and Ornamental Horticulture Convention
(SALOHC), hosted by SAGIC at the Protea Technopark Hotel, Stellenbosch.
