FEATURE

material for UNISA, SALI and SAGIC, as well
as training and contract research for SANBI.
Recent physical projects have been more
          community centred: Inanda Wild Children’s
          Park for Durban Municipality, Ethelburt
          Children’s Home and Bonela Secondary
          School.
He is currently rebranding Ground Level
          Landscapes to Jonathan Foley Landscapes
since he has now retired from DUT and
most people are more familiar with
his first name. The focus will still be on
          professional landscape and horticulture
          training, design, consulting and project
management. He hopes to build up the
landscape academy component to offer a
full range of credited and bespoke courses
to all levels of the industry.

Future of the South African green
          industry
He believes the South African green
industry has a great future, supported
by many talented individuals active in
the nursery and landscape sector. “Our
country has one of the world’s richest and
most biodiverse ranges of flora and fauna.
The challenge is to select diverse and
appropriate plant palettes that reflect this
richness and to engage more clients in an
          ongoing conversation about developing,
          maturing and maintaining their outdoor
          garden spaces.”
The other pressing challenge is to actively
          integrate more young people (graduates)
into the industry so they can grow the
green movement into a living legacy for all
          South Africans.
